“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted in the Gentiles, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” – Psalms 46:10-11 JUB

It can be quite challenging to truly still ourselves in order to know God. Being still requires us to surrender control and trust that God knows what is best for us. The NET translation suggests that we should “stop our striving and recognize that He is God!”

To recognize means to know something for certain and make sure of it. Why does God want us to be certain of who He is and what He is capable of? Because knowing Him brings us rest, assurance, and peace. When we understand the value of what God wants to give us, it becomes easier to let go of what we are holding onto.

God wants us to have rest and remove anxiety from our lives. He desires to comfort us and lead us in peace. Ultimately, He wants us to trust and believe that He is God, in control, on our side, and our defense.

Let’s look at how The Passion Translation (TPT) reads:

“Surrender your anxiety. Be still and realize that I am God. I am God above all the nations, and I am exalted throughout the whole earth. Here He stands! The Commander! The mighty Lord of Angel Armies is on our side! The God of Jacob fights for us! Pause in His presence.” – Psalms 46:10-11 TPT

“The Lord will fight for you while you [only need to] keep silent and remain calm.” – Exodus 14:14 AMP

Remaining calm and walking in His comfort and peace comes from recognizing who God truly is. To know Him, we need to spend time with Him. This requires prioritizing our lives and placing value on His presence, letting go of anything that hinders our relationship with Him in order to gain understanding.
